Thirteen Police Suspended in Sylhet Over Extortion Claims

Thirteen police officers from the Companyganj Police Station in Sylhet have been suspended over extortion allegations. An investigation is underway, and further action will follow.

SILHET: Thirteen police officers from the Companyganj Police Station in Sylhet have been suspended over allegations of extortion. The officers reportedly demanded bribes from trucks carrying stones from Shah Arefin Hill, which led to their suspension.

 

The suspended officers include two Sub-Inspectors (SI), two Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASI), and nine Constables. All of them have been transferred to the Sylhet Police Lines for now.

 

Sylhet’s Police Superintendent, Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman, confirmed the development on Tuesday. He stated that the officers were suspended due to allegations of irregularities and corruption. A thorough investigation will be conducted, after which further action will be taken.

 

The decision to suspend the officers was formalized on Monday (February 10), following an office order signed by Sylhet’s Additional Police Superintendent (Administration & Finance), Mohammad Raselur Rahman.

 

The suspended officers are identified as SI Khokon Chandra Sarkar, SI Milan Fakir, ASI Shishir Ahmed Mukul, ASI Shamim Hasan, Constables Nazmul Ahsan, Munna Chowdhury, Naimur Rahman, Tushar Pal, Abu Hanif, Sakhawat Sadi, Sagar Chandra Das, Mehedi Hossain, and Kipesh Chandra Ray.

 

The controversy erupted after reports emerged in several newspapers about the police officers standing on the road and extorting money from trucks transporting stones from Shah Arefin Hill. Following the news reports, the officers were transferred to the Sylhet Police Lines.
