Gopalganj: Police have arrested Awami League leader Abul Kalam Kalu Mirdha in connection with the murder of Shaukat Ali Didar, central sports secretary of the BNP’s Voluntary Party. Mirdha, who was a member of the Gopalganj Kashiani Upazila Awami League and former general secretary of the Krishak League, was taken into custody on Tuesday.

The arrest was confirmed by Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kashiani Police Station, Mohammad Shafiuddin Khan, on Tuesday afternoon.

He stated that Mirdha was arrested on the evening of Monday, February 3, from the bus stand area of the upazila headquarters. He was arrested as a suspected defendant in the Didar murder case. Mirdha was presented in court on Tuesday afternoon.

It’s important to note that on September 13 of last year, Shaukat Ali Didar, along with the wife, children, and party leaders of central Voluntary Party President SM Zillani, was on their way to his home in Patgati village, Tungipara. When they reached the Ghonapara area of the sadar upazila, their vehicle convoy was attacked. During the attack, Didar was beaten to death and his body was left by the side of the highway.

On September 17 of the same year, Didar's wife, Rabeya Rahman, filed a murder case with Gopalganj Sadar Police Station, naming 117 individuals and identifying 1,500 unnamed suspects.
