Apple to Pay $20M to Settle Watch Battery Lawsuit

Apple has agreed to pay $20 million to settle a class action lawsuit over battery swelling issues in Apple Watches. Eligible users of affected Apple Watch models will receive compensation ranging from $20 to $50.

Dhaka: Apple has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit in the United States by paying $20 million after claims of Apple Watch batteries swelling. The lawsuit, filed due to swelling batteries in certain Apple Watch models, will see the iPhone maker compensate affected users.

According to tech site Engadget, Apple will provide compensation to those who used affected models of the watch. The company is addressing claims that some first-generation Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3 Apple Watch models had a tendency for battery swelling, which could potentially damage the devices.

Apple has denied these claims, stating in a statement to TechCrunch that they “strongly disagree” with the allegations. However, the company has agreed to settle the matter to avoid further legal action.

The exact amount of compensation depends on how many eligible Apple users come forward. Estimates suggest that each eligible user could receive between $20 and $50 for their affected device.

Apple’s website provides full details about eligibility and deadlines for the class action lawsuit. To be eligible for compensation, Apple Watch users in the United States must have reported the issue to the company between April 24, 2015, and February 6, 2024.

The website further states, “Settlement class members will receive the funds without the need to submit a claim form.” Users will only need to submit their information via the settlement website by April 10.

Apple will notify eligible users about the settlement via mail and email, informing them about their entitlement to compensation.
